Porting to use astropy from pyfits

Owen Arnold requested to merge use_astropy into master

pyfits is smaller, but seems to be unmaintained. Astropy seems to be api compatible. Astropy looks to be currently supported and has excellent documentation. http://docs.astropy.org/en/stable/
